Calls for Submissions OPEN

The Cleveland Institute of Art’s Reinberger Gallery and Alumni Council are excited to announce an open call for art for the 2024 Alumni Exhibition.

Artists and designers working in any medium are welcome to apply. Submissions are free and will be accepted through Friday, April 19. Artists selected to participate in the exhibition will receive a $200 honorarium and shipping support.

The exhibition will from run June 21 through August 9.

Guest Curator

We are pleased to announce that Magdelena Moskalewicz will be our esteemed guest curator of the 2024 Alumni Exhibition.

Magdalena Moskalewicz, PhD is an art historian, author and editor based in Chicago, whose curatorial collaborations with living artists critically investigate particular histories, localities and identities with the goal of reshaping dominant narratives. Born in Warsaw, Poland, Moskalewicz has worked at collecting, exhibiting and academic institutions internationally. This includes The Museum of Modern Art, New York, where she was the Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow for C-MAP, MoMA’s global research initiative; the 56th Venice Biennale, where she curated the Polish Pavilion in 2015; and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she taught and mentored the next generation of socially aware artists and arts administrators. Most recently, she was the Chief Curator of FRONT International: Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art. Moskalewicz has engaged in the revisionist rewriting of art histories and in exploring parallels between the postsocialist and postcolonial conditions through both academic publications and curatorial practice. Her scholarly research has focused on socialist modernism, neo-avantgardes, global exhibition histories and cultural policies. She is interested in re-envisioning models of knowledge production, communication, and display.

Submission Guidelines

Submissions will be accepted via this online form through Friday, April 19, 2024.

We welcome submissions from CIA alums working in all media, regardless of your graduating major.

The exhibition will explore issues related to artistic evolution, attempting to answer the question: What is it to become a mature artist? We encourage applying alumni to reflect on their artistic trajectory since graduation; on how their creative work progressed/transformed over the years. This evolution may refer to the work’s physical form or their artistic process, or both. Conversely, this can also be a reflection on the persistence of a form/process developed years ago. Is artistic maturity about arriving at a perfect form? A foolproof process? A status? An attitude?

Up to three (3) original works can be submitted digitally by Friday, April 19, 2024.

  • There is no fee to submit. If you would like to support CIA by donating to a designated fund (such as the Alumni Scholarship Fund), click here!
  • All submissions must be original work made within the last five years.
  • Please include high-quality images of the artwork in JPG, PNG, or PDF format for review. Submissions must not exceed the resolution of 300 dpi and a length greater than 1500 pixels in any one direction.
  • Moving-image submissions should be accompanied by a link to view the work online (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.).
  • There are no object size limitations for submissions.
  •  Please include the title, medium and dimensions when submitting.
  • So that we can better understand your work, we ask that you submit a brief artist statement to accompany your submission as well as answer a few brief questions.

Notification

Selected artists will be notified via email by no later than May 10. Artists whose work is selected for the exhibition will receive instructions regarding delivery of their artwork. If accepted into the exhibition, participating artists will receive a $200 honoraria plus additional shipping support.
