7.1 Ohio Workers’ Compensation

The Cleveland Institute of Art provides a comprehensive workers’ compensation insurance program at no cost to all employees. This program provides partial pay and covers any injury or illness sustained in the course of employment that requires medical, surgical, or hospital treatment. Subject to applicable legal requirements, workers’ compensation insurance provides benefits after a short waiting period or, if the employee is hospitalized, immediately.

If an employee sustains a work-related injury or illness, the employee should immediately inform their supervisor, no matter how minor it may appear, and complete a written incident report. Contact Human Resources for more information about workers’ compensation.

7.2 Unemployment

Under Ohio law, most employers are required to pay contributions for unemployment insurance. CIA, as a not-for-profit organization, does not pay a premium for unemployment insurance, but rather reimburses the State directly for payments made to its former eligible staff members.

7.3 Social Security/Medicare

As a wage earner, you are required by law to contribute a portion of your earnings to Social Security and Medicare. As your employer, CIA is required to deduct this amount from each paycheck you receive. In addition, CIA contributes toward these benefits on your behalf. This is often referred to as “FICA.”
